What's the best place for you to get a workout? That really depends on the individual person who's working out. Some people thrive in the crowded environment of a commercial gym, while some can't properly perform their workout if they think someone may be looking at them. The best way to answer this question is to determine which type of gym you'll actually use on a regular basis - because the one you'll use is going to yield the most results for you personally.

That being said, here are some of the basic differences and advantages that each type of workout environment has over the other.

Customization

If you join a commercial gym, you are at the mercy of the equipment that they have on site. Though this isn't a problem for most people, as many commercial gyms are loaded to the gills with all of the latest workout machines and gadgets, if there is one piece of equipment that you feel you get the best possible benefits from there is nothing stopping you from putting it in your home gym.

You can situate your home gym in absolutely any fashion that you want - the only real limits are the amount of space you have available in your house and how much money you are willing and capable of investing in your home gym. In my opinion this is a huge advantage for home gyms over commercial gyms.

Time and Travel

Your home gym never closes; it's open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, fifty two weeks a year. If you want to workout, for some reason, at two in the morning on Christmas Eve, your home gym will be ready and waiting. You home gym also requires zero travel - no going out in the cold, no fighting traffic - you can just workout as soon as you get your gym clothes on.

Variety

If you are the type of person who doesn't like performing the same type of workout for too long a duration, then a home gym atmosphere may be too limiting for you. Few people have the kind of money it would take to have the sheer variety of options that are available in a commercial gym. Some commercial gyms have a dozen varieties of treadmills and a dozen varieties of exercise bikes, not to mention elliptical machines, spinners, an Olympic size swimming pool and a whole host of classes to get meet your cardio needs. Even if you work on your home gym for a number of years, it's unlikely that you'll ever get to the point of variety that you'll get at a commercial gym.

Instruction

In your home gym, you're on your own - this is fine if you've got a good base knowledge of exercises and movements, but someone with no experience may need a little guidance. Many gym memberships come with a complimentary session with one of the staff personal trainers - if you feel you benefit from this service you can continue using a personal trainer for a fee. This is an added expense but some people need the education and motivation from a trainer to be able to get results.

As you can clearly see, there are advantages and disadvantages to both home gyms and commercial gyms. The whole point of going to any gym, whether it's at your house or not - is to get a good workout and to get yourself in better health. In order to get the results that you desire from any workout program - you actually need to do the workout. If you are lost and need instruction - a commercial gym membership may be the best investment; if you can't stand crowds, bright lights and waiting for machines than you'd probably be more comfortable in a home gym atmosphere. What it all boils down to is personal preference - the best gym for you is the one you are going to use, plain and simple.

Treadmill Or Elliptical Trainer Workouts

We live in a society obsessed with losing weight and getting fit. In response there are countless products on the market that claim to get you in shape.   Most are fads that come and go. For example, how many people are still working out with a Thigh Master.  But, occasionally an exercise machine is designed that gets results. It promotes fitness and wellness. It helps both novice and fitness enthusiasts reach their exercise goals. It has 'staying' power!

The two most popular fitness machines that fit this qualification are treadmills and elliptical trainers.   The tried and true treadmill has been around for years.  It remains popular due to its appeal to both novice and seasoned athletes.   It is a simple machine that requires no special skills, all you need to do is walk, jog or run.  

Although relatively new in comparison to a treadmill, the elliptical trainer is growing in popularity.  In shear numbers the treadmill outsells ellipticals, but by percentage the elliptical is gaining in sales.  It offers the benefit of a total body workout without the impact.

How do treadmills compare with elliptical training equipment? What benefits do each machine offer? Could either be right for you?

Treadmills

Treadmills are the most popular fitness equipment.  They are simple to use and provide an excellent cardiovascular workout.  Treadmills allow you to walk, jog or run.  In addition, they can simulate hill climbing.

In shear numbers running and walking are the most popular form of exercise. Whether you are a casual walker or a serious runner, a treadmill can accommodate your exercise needs. By setting the speed and incline you can adjust your cardio workout to any level - from casual walking to heart pounding running.  

Most power treadmills offer a number of pre-set programs and intensity levels from which to choose. On these particular machines, you may program in your personal information (i.e. age, weight, height, fitness level, etc.). Then, you may choose a pre-set program (such as 'killer hill,'  'interval training' or 'weight-loss'), and the unit will automatically adjust the workout to fit your specifications.

You can bypass the pre-set programs and manually adjust the incline, speed, and the time yourself. And, even if you've chosen a pre-set program, you have the option of changing the incline level or speed level at any time.

Running on a treadmill with a nicely cushioned running surface provides less impact on the knees, shins, ankles, back, and joints than does running on pavement.  As a result, the runner who uses a treadmill is less likely to sustain a running injury than a runner who runs upon a harder surface. (Nonetheless, a runner's body will still experience impact when the foot lands on the belt.)

Outdoors, you could possibly trip over a rock or twist your ankle in an unseen hole in the ground. You don't have to worry about unseen road or trail hazards when exercising on a treadmill. You need only maintain your rhythm on the moving belt.

Treadmills not only efficiently burn calories, but their impact reducing surfaces decrease the chances for injuries.  

Elliptical Trainers

Elliptical trainers are relatively new to the fitness equipment industry. They have increased in popularity during the last few years, and the rate of growth is surpassing treadmills.  But, do they deliver what they promise - a low impact, total body workout?

Elliptical trainers allow the user to burn a similar number of calories as they would from walking or jogging - but without the risk of injury to the back, knees, hips, or ankles. The difference in comparison to a treadmill is your feet never leave the foot pedals.

As a result, an elliptical is very low-impact and significantly reduces the pressure on your joints. In fact, whereas exercising on a treadmill requires your body to absorb the impact  of walking or running, exercising on an elliptical can be compared to running in midair.  Running can result in 2.5x your body weight impacting a treadmill.  

Because of the low impact quality of an elliptical trainer, this machine may be the best choice  for older people or individuals who are recovering from injuries.  That is the obvious reason ellipticals are so popular with us baby boomers.  Our joints are starting to tell us they've had enough.
Elliptical machines mimic the normal elliptical motion of the foot, the extension of the leg, and the rotation of the hip during walking or running. This motion uses all the leg muscles, giving you a total lower-body workout.

But what makes an elliptical workout so enticing is you also get a upper body workout (unlike the treadmill, which works only the lower body)! As the feet go through their elliptical motion, the hands grip the moving handlebars, exercising the arms. The movement of the dual handlebars mimics cross-country skiing. This particular type of upper body workout will not result in a bodybuilder's physique. However, because you are including the upper 30% of your body in your workouts, the results will be more efficient exercise in less time.

Because elliptical trainers DO work the upper and lower body simultaneously, the heart rate climbs more quickly. Thus, less time is required to achieve more results. The amount of energy expended is optimized. As the legs are being worked, the back, shoulders, chest, biceps, and triceps are also working...making it possible to burn more calories in less time. (An optimal workout need only be about 20-30 minutes long, if you apply the right amount of resistance.)

Another advantage of elliptical trainers are the foot pedals can be worked in a forward or reverse direction. When you change the direction of the pedals, you'll target your lower body in different ways. It is nice to be able to add versatility to your elliptical workouts, and such a change works to ensure optimal training of the leg muscles.

The intensity level can be adjusted on elliptical equipment to fit your personal level of fitness. Resistance may be added as desired to increase the workload on your legs throughout the forward or backward stride. With such an efficient workout, you can say 'goodbye' to flabby thighs and derrieres!

Studies show working out on an elliptical trainer can trick the body into believing it is working easier than it actually is. Therefore, as you're burning more calories in less time on an elliptical trainer, your body feels as though it doesn't have to work as hard to achieve its goals. This phenomenon is known as the "Rate of Perceived Exertion."

An elliptical device is safe to use (i.e. it stops when you stop). It uses very little electricity and is economical to operate. Because of its low impact, there is less wear and tear of the machine, making maintenance quite low. It has a small footprint, so it takes up less floor space than other fitness equipment. And, as with the treadmill, it allows you to exercise in a controlled environment for more comfort and convenience.

And the Winner Is!

Which is better, a treadmill or elliptical trainer?  Both give an excellent cardio workout and when used regularly will burn unwanted calories.  

For a walking or running devotee, the treadmill is the machine of choice.  Even if you prefer the great outdoors, the treadmill allows you to continue your favorite sport all year long and in the most inclement weather.  A treadmill will reduce injuries since you workout on a flat surface that is cushioned.  It can add variety to your workout through various challenging programs.  And with heart rate control you can optimize your exercising by allowing your heart rate to control the level of exertion.

The appeal of an elliptical is the combined upper and lower body workout, and the low-impact. You exercise more muscle groups, while avoiding the kind of impact that can result in injuries.  For those of us whose knees or ankles just can't take it any longer, the elliptical trainer is the obvious choice.

So which one do you choose?  Depending upon your preference and needs either can be an excellent choice.

What's a good, sturdy, quiet mid-priced treadmill or other exercise machine?

elliptical machines?

Anyone have a suggestion re a compact elliptical machine for a large man? I hear there are two types of machines....rear drive machines are better but front drive machines are better for space. I can spend a decent amount but I have less space in my NYC appartment. And I don't want my weight at 260lbs to be a factor either...can anyone help me with any suggestions on research, or with suggestions on specific brands to consider? Thanks.

As a fitness professional I've used and seen a lot of different types of ellipticals. For the home elliptical market, I'm not sure who told you that rear drive units were better than front drive. Maybe that was the case 5 - 10 years ago when ellipticals were relatively new on the fitness scene and there were only rear drive units available. First, let's address your space concerns. For small NYC apartments a rear drive unit will not fit your surroundings well. That only leaves front drive units. Then you'll need to make sure your elliptical can handle your weight capacity requirement. Don't even consider poor quality, high noise, and high repair/recall brands like ICON (includes such names as NordicTrack, ProForm, Weider, Weslo, Cadence, Image, Epic, Reebok, HealthRider, & Gold's Gym), Nautilus (includes such names as Bowflex, Schwinn, & Nautilus), and Edge. I'd recommend a well known brand that has an excellent track record for quality, such as Horizon Fitness.

With that said 2 ellipticals come to mind; the EX66 & the EX76. Both Horizon Fitness ellipticals are great units, with features, styling, and noise suppression that it's competitors can't match. Horizon is pure quality (no flimsiness), with excellent warranties and for their price Horizon's the best deal around! You can pick up the EX66 for about $798 and the EX76 for about 998. My pick is the EX76 due to the HOT "power incline" feature, which was inspired by Precor (one of the most trusted & experienced brands in the industry) through their working relationship with Johnson Tech., Horizon’s parent company.

How many years should a commercial elliptical trainer last (Life Fitness 9500 front drive unit)?

I have the option of buying a 10yr old Life Fitness 9500 front drive unit elliptical from a resale supplier (bought it off of a gym or college). I am unsure how long these commercial ellipticals typically last, so I don't know if buying a 10yr old elliptical is a wise decision. Help!

It depnds on howmuch they were used and how good the care on them was, if they were regularly maintained they probably have another 10 years in them

Buying Equipment for a Home Gym: What you Should Know First

So you've gone through all the options and decided that a home gym is right for you. After all it's convenient, private and can save you money by not paying for a gym membership.

You know what's coming next. You have to plunk down 200, 500, maybe even 2,000 dollars to get the system that you want. And with all the choices out there how do you really know what you want anyway?

There are two main types of machines on the market, cardiovascular and strength training. Your body will look very different after you've shed the pounds depending on which exercise machine you choose.

Cardiovascular: These machines get your heart pumping quickly and increase your overall stamina. They include treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes, rowing exercise machines, steppers and skiers. Once you get your heart rate going on one of these machines you'll start shedding calories fast. And most come with a calorie tracker so you can see when you've burned off that hamburger you felt so guilty about eating.

Cardio machines often only focus on a few muscles, meaning that your legs might get toned but you won't get a six-pack or strengthen your arm muscles if all you do is use an elliptical. If you want a toned look all over, you'll need to add other exercises like sit-ups and push-ups to your routine.

When shopping for a safe machine make sure it is sturdy and quiet when in use. Some cheaper brands tend to be wobbly which can be dangerous and distract you from getting the most out of your workout. An anti static floor mat may also help the stability of your machine by creating a hard surface for it to stand on. Compare prices to the quality of a brand you like. It may be worth it to get the upgrade because it will last longer.

You'll also want the control panel to have quick response time because when you've reached your limit on a treadmill you need to stop immediately. Some machines keep going until a few seconds after you press the button.

To avoid having problems order from an online retailer that has a good return policy. Check to see how thick the base legs are. This is something you can find easily on Pro Form treadmills or NordicTrack Ellipticals.

Strength Training: This is what you want if you're looking for the big bulk. Pumping weights is the fastest way to get larger muscles without using harmful drugs. You can also tone your muscles with strength training by lifting smaller amounts.

You may find that it's worth it to spend a little extra money to get an all-in-one gym that targets most major muscle groups than a machine that focuses on just a few.

And don't be surprised if you don't lose any weight after strength training for a long period of time. Since muscle weighs more than fat you may even find that you've gained a few pounds.

Take the time to analyze your goals. What areas of your body are you concerned about and how do you envision yourself looking at its best? You may decide that what you need is a combination of cardiovascular exercise from a machine like the Pro Form treadmill and strength training from a set of weights. Exercise - Most Effective Cardio Workouts

I’m well aware that the title of this article has many treadmill / elliptical users pissed. But at least I got your attention. Whatever you may believe, I’m here to inform you how useless (most ineffective) elliptical and treadmill cardio workouts really are. Not to mention the dull and sheer bore of the workout, I’ll supply you with more effective methods of fat-burning without the excessive loss of time. 

I want to first state that if you love your elliptical or treadmill workout routine enough and enjoy doing it, then keep doing it. Beyond facts, the most important workout is the most enjoyable workout. But I will still indulge you in the reasons why they are highly ineffective compared to other methods, after that you can make your own decision. 

Overall, after this I will be giving you fair notice on why they are wasteful, so don’t say I didn’t. 

Personally I don’t like using cardio machines at all as methods of fat burning or other exercise. I prefer to have hands on, proactive training such as a sport (racquet ball, bball, badminton) or something team oriented where there is an overall goal. Not running for a certain time in the same pattern to reach a mark. 

Why do I think cardio machines are so awful? Well, here's 5 reasons:

1) From the economically point, the pricing. Why buy a $1500 machine that doesn’t provide any effective health benefits besides the mental understanding that you’ll get for thinking you’re doing something effective.

You'll see plenty of ideas below for better home workouts if you don't like going to a gym to work out.

2) From the scientific perspective, they don’t do nothing for your body! Why would you want to engage in something that doesn’t stimulate any fat burning hormones or other body mechanisms that can help you lose weight?! There are better ways available!

3) As I said before, they’re boring.

4) Exercise machines become habit, routine, tedious. Which is never a good thing in any phase of a workout. While running on your treadmill you can read a book, watch tv or focus on something else. This isn’t the proper way to exercise; you should have to concentrate fully on the exercise at hand. 

5) Multiple tests prove that treadmill running has the potential to be highly less effective than outdoor / nature running. For reasons such as stride lengths, terrains, constantly engaging different muscles at different intensities and lengths, air supply and so on.

So what are some good alternatives to elliptical machine and treadmill workouts? Here are a few highly effective methods: 

Outdoor wind sprint workouts – Look at any world class sprinter, do you envy their body? Probably. Compare that rock hard body with world class marathon runners; scrawny little things. See what I’m saying… 

Jumping rope – CRAZY mind – body relationship is formed in this. Complete coordination and balance. Plus you can create variety with loads of different methods. 

Bodyweight exercises – Anything you need just your body for. Speed peddlers, pushups, dips, squats, lunges, planks, mountain runners etc…

Rowing Machine – A complete body workout that has all your muscles working together. Demands more concentration than ellipticals and treadmills and works much better. 

Hill sprinting – Run up a graded hill, walk down. Repeat as many times as you can (another world class running drill) 

Shadow boxing – a ridiculous killer workout, but better done if the confinements of your home if you’d like to avoid embarrassment.  

Swimming sprints – An intense workout done in the pool. Instead of pace swimming, swim as hard as you can for 1 lap. Rest for 20 seconds, then go at it again!

Heavy bag punching/kicking workouts, speed bag, rebounding bag - all are tremendous workouts and much more fun than boring cardio machines and require immense muscle – body – mind focus. 

So, I hope I was able to enlighten your view on elliptical and treadmill workouts. As well as bring you some more variety on different workouts you can do that are more effective.
